The Five Most Famous Poker Players
There are many famous poker players in the casino online world, but five of them stand out above the rest. These players are Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson, and Mike ‘the mouth’ Matusow. What makes this list so interesting is that they each have such different styles.
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey has a reputation for being very aggressive, but if you watch him play in the past few years, you will notice that he’s slowed down the aggression a bit. Instead of trying to blast through opponents, he will trust his reads and act accordingly.
The best part about this is that Phil still has that aggressive image. Therefore, if he plays in a game where everyone fears him, he can still turn up the pressure and make a killing.
Phil Ivey’s most recent accomplishment was making it to the final table in the 2009 World Series of Poker.
Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson, otherwise known as ‘Texas Dolly’ is the grandfather of poker. He always draws a crowd and is well respected by everyone. He began playing in Texas several decades ago, where several of his poker-playing friends were murdered in back-room games. One player who made it out with him is Amarillo Slim, who doesn’t command as much attention but is also very well respected.
Doyle has a reputation of playing tight, although he will throw a curve ball in there once in a while to steal a pot and keep people guessing. His experience shows and it’s very rare you see him get felted.
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu is best known for his reading ability. While he has made a lot of money in over a decade of living and playing poker in Las Vegas, bad luck has also been a part of his journey. On the popular, televised cash game, High Stakes Poker, Daniel was ahead on many flops and pushed the action aggressively. Almost every time, his opponent called and caught up by the river, causing Daniel to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Daniel will be fine. He’s one of the most marketable names out there.
Chris Ferguson
Chris Ferguson is primarily a tournament player. He won the 2000 World Series of Poker with A9 when his opponent held AK. The flop had an ace. His opponent bet and after much debate, Chris called. A 9 came on the river, giving Chris the title.
Chris is best known for his robotic-like pose and Jesus-like hair. He’s an extremely tight player, but will go all-in on the flop if he thinks he’s ahead. This is one reason he’s better suited for tournament play.
Mike ‘the mouth’ Matusow
Mike Matusow is a very good poker player without much discipline. Professional players know that if they get Mike on tilt, it’s only a matter of time before his chips are divided amongst all the other players at the table. That said, if Mike gets hot, he won’t shut up, and will razz his opponents to no end. Many players will purposely call draws just to get Mike on tilt.
Some honorable mentions: Phil Helmuth, Allen Cunningham, Johnny Chan
